It is the most common known cause of inherited mental impairment. The spectrum of intellectual involvement ranges from subtle learning difficulties and a normal IQ to severe developmental disability and autism. In addition to mental impairment, fragile X syndrome is associated with a group of physical and behavioral characteristics as well as speech and language delays.
